From Copenhagen we took about a one hour flight to Stavanger, Norway. About a 20 minute Uber to our hotel in the downtown area, where we stayed for 3 (make that 4) nights.

This is a beautiful town on a fjord in south western Norway, where ships are built and maintained in dry dock - many having to do with the oil industry here. A great little waterfront area with shops and restaurants, but a bit ruined by the gigantic cruise ships that arrived nearly every day. Some of the hotels on the water looked great - until their view became looking into staterooms on deck 6!! Anyway, the town was great, with a beautiful old town area.

While we were here we took an RIB excursion to go further up into the fjords and to see an area called “Pulpit Rock”. I had no idea, but it was incredible from the water, and you can also hike to it, and stand on the edge (we could see a few tee shirts up above - way up!). Found out this was a place used in one of the Tom Cruise Mission Impossible movies (Google it - I’ll try to attach a link to the YouTube). We passed several beautiful waterfall and a few fish farms on this little outing as well.

Like I said we stayed here 3 - I mean 4 nights. Can you guess why….

Yes, an ABBA tribute band was playing, so we of course had to rearrange flights & hotels to hang out here one more night. It was great fun and yes - the “Dancing Queen” lives on!

Stavanger was well worth the stop and a great place to dip our toes into fjord life.

Next we headed to Bergen. This was going to be a 4 night stop, but while we were in Stavanger we decided we wanted to spend as much time on the fjords as possible, so again a few changes. But we did get to spend some time wandering the streets in the old town area, and having some fabulous food.

We stayed in a Moxy Hotel here. It worked out great and we were able to store some of our luggage here while we took a couple days to head off on the fjords to visit Balestrand. More on that in the next post.

We’ve been lucky so far with weather - but you just know as green as it is here, there must be some rain in our future.

More from the fjords to follow.

Take care,

Tim & Eileen
