It’s time to take another trip! This time we’ll head to Scandinavia - an area neither of us have visited before. And this will be a bit of a whirlwind for us - only a little more than a month on this adventure. The costs to travel seem to have taken a significant increase in the past two years since COVID with hotels, AirBNB’s, airlines, restaurants, etc., all seemingly eager to wipe away any losses they may have had. And Scandinavia was already a pricey destination!

To get started we left Seattle with a three night stop in Boston - another place we had not visited in the past. Rich in history and wonderful food and beautiful coastal towns, we had a great time in this short visit. And of course we found a little place where “Everybody knows your name”…

A walking tour of the downtown area and the North End took us past the Old State House where there is a memorial to the Boston Massacre. It was interesting to learn that Paul Revere’s engraving of this event (which was really not a massacre) was possibly the most effective piece of war propaganda ever. A little bit of “misinformation” perhaps?? Anyway, a good walking tour with some great food along the way, including the first of several Lobster Rolls (yummm!).

We also had the opportunity to take a full day trip to Martha’s Vineyard seeing some beautiful coastline with mansion a-many, and lighthouses as well. Oh, and another Lobster Roll!

Time to hop across the pond (as they say). We landed in Copenhagen as our first stop on this adventure. Just a couple nights here, so we make the most of it by taking a “Guruwalk” in the old town area and then using the Hop-on-Hop-of bus and boats to get some different views of this city.

This is a beautiful city with canals, houseboats and a fabulous old wharf area jammed with restaurants and souvenir shops. Our guide Martin was born and raised here and it is obvious they are proud of their monarchy (they love the Queen and family).

And Hans Christian Andersen is probably the most famous and most loved of all. We of course saw the “Little Mermaid” statue, but just from the boat. Small (maybe 3 feet tall), but a mighty tourist magnet!

We enjoyed Smorrebrod - the Danish open faced sandwiches that are a bit like a Spanish Pincho, but a full size (not bite sized) sandwich. Topped with pickled herring, onions, capers and other items, these are probably really good - if you like pickled herring!! We followed one of these with a beer chaser, and then the Danish hot dog - by far, tops on my list. A dog wrapped in bacon and covered with everything including pickles!

We had a great time on this first leg of our journey. Next we are headed to Norway for about 10 days or so - visiting fjords and tasting…reindeer????

More later. All the best,

Tim & Eileen
